Puerto Princesa: A City In A Forest

Puerto princesa a city in a forest

As a student, I only get a chance to travel and see the other islands of the Philippines through competitions of different schools from different provinces like press conferences, dance competitions and contests related to science, math and the like. And I am so fortunate to be one of the representatives of our school and of MIMAROPA for Broadcasting and Scriptwriting competition during the National School’s Press Conference that took place in Palawan. Right after our group won in regionals, we were so excited to even step the land of Palawan. Before we thought, “Even if we didn’t win in the nationals, it’ll be worth it because hey, it’s Puerto Princesa!” We are really blessed. When we finally arrived at the city in a forest, we noticed that it really possess the adjectives of being a province: fresh air, cool trees. But it’s not just that. It’s a province with multiple attractions, including the world’s famous Underground River. But sadly, we weren’t able to get there because, uhm, actually, I really don’t know the reason. Not enough budget? Far from our quarters? I don’t know. However, we still had the chance to see the other attractions of the city because there’s a day allotted for our tour in the four-day NSPC. I had two words for our Puerto Princesa – fun and educational.

Irawan Eco Adventure

If you are travelling to Puerto Princesa, put first Irawan Eco Adventure on the list of your destinations. They provide a lot of adventures that visitors will definitely enjoy like zip line, sky walk, river trail, fish feeding, carabao cart ride, bee farm tour, jungle survival, river massage, tarzan swing, wall climbing and butterfly farm. People there are also accomodating. They even let us taste their own buko for free.

Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center

See! Puerto Princesa also gives educational destinations like the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center. The Crocodile Park inside caught our attention that’s why the photos below are pure crocodile. For sure, you will also be attracted if a huge skeleton and wide skin of their largest crocodile meet you in the main hall of the center. Because of this, I appreciate crocodiles more and find them cute. If they are not that dangerous, I’ll take one home and treat it as a pet.

Palawan Butterfly Eco Garden and Tribal Village

The facade of Palawan Butterfly Eco Garden and Tribal Village is irresistible. You will never say no if they invite you to come in. And of course, the inside was a lot more beautiful. With wonderful creatures flying around you, the place is eco-friendly and culturally refreshing. I can stay there for a whole day. It is also a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of local tribal life and some of the families who make their living from the forest.

Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm

Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm 4

I was impressed on how friendly and hospitable the prisoners are. Well, they have to be because I must say that they are the freest prisoners that I have seen. Imagine! They have the access to all modern day facilities and have their own little convenience stores and grow their own farm. Even prisoners experience the fun in the Philippines, huh. But despite of that, escape attempts are rare. Apart from that, they make good souvenirs. So if are looking for pasalubongs, check out Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm.
