Smurfs: The Lost Village Movie Review

What is a Smurfette? The flick started by asking this question because as you have noticed, the male Smurfs are named after their behavior, like Clumsy, Brainy and Hefty, while in Smurfette’s case, they claim that her name doesn’t tell anything about her. But in fact, it does. Being the only girl in their village means that Smurfette is a smurfette or a female smurf. But aside from being a girl, she’s totally different because she’s not a real smurf. She was actually created from a lump of clay by a villainous wizard named Gargamel as his way to capture the Smurfs, steal all of their essence and become the most powerful wizard in the world. Sounds familiar? I know right. The screenplay is somewhat similar to Trolls. Even the characters resemble each other.

Going back to the movie, Smurfette, Clumsy, Brainy and Hefty saw a blue creature who, they believe, is a smurf from the lost village Gargamel is targeting. Although it’s forbidden by Papa Smurf, the four Smurfs find their way out of their own village to find the lost village and inform the Smurfs living there about Gargamel’s plan. When they finally reached their destination, they found out that it’s a village for female Smurfs. They learned to join forces against Gargamel. I’m glad that the plot gets creative as the story goes on. But I must say that it’s still weak to catch the hearts of the audience.

Moreover, I find the ending weak because Smurfette fought Gargamel as simple as that without making our hearts skip a bit. I didn’t feel the intensity at all. It’s also an irony that she was absorbing his magic powers but then she reverts back to her original lifeless clay form. But let’s just say that it is bound to happen. Then why did Smurfette comes back to life and become a real Smurf again? I feel that the merged energy of the Smurfs is not enough reason for that. It seems to me that the movie makers just brought Smurfette back to life because she should be since she’s part of the first two films. But that’s just for me. I don’t know about the others.

Speaking of the first two films, The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2, I wish that they became consistent of producing a sequel that is a combination of live action and computer-animated because as I see it, they create a better story if there’s an interaction between human and Smurfs. But having a fully animated film like this proved their brilliance in producing animations. The colorful visuals can hook not just the kids but also the child-free adults. It’s really entertaining to watch despite having a silly story line.
