Best Of 7 Eleven Konbini Finds

Forget the usual tourist traps. If you ask me, one of the best experiences to have in Japan, especially in Fukuoka, apart from GU shopping, is the konbini haul. Every night after a full day of exploring, my husband and I made it a ritual to stop by 7-Eleven, Lawson, or Family Mart to check out what cool, weird, or delicious things we could try. Honestly, convenience stores in Japan aren’t just for emergencies. They’re an essential part of the culture. With how good their food is, we could easily survive a whole trip just eating from konbinis. From perfectly crafted bentos to unexpectedly flavorful snacks, it’s a level above in terms of quality and variety. It’s restaurant-level food at a fraction of the price.
Here’s are the 7-Eleven-branded items I tried during my recent Fukuoka trip.
Crab-Flavored Fish Paste

I found out this wasn’t actual crab, but fish paste flavored like crab and that blew my mind! It was big, juicy, and delicious. Once you bite into it, you can tell from the texture that it’s made from fish paste. It’s impressive how close it comes to real crab.
White Mocha

This is surprisingly good for a convenience store brew. It had the sweetness of a caramel macchiato, mixed with the creaminess of white mocha. Although that milkiness left a slightly odd aftertaste, overall, it was a pleasant drink.
Chicken Cutlet Sandwich

I was hoping this would be like Family Mart’s famous Famichiki pancake sandwich, but sadly, this one fell short. The bread was dry, and the overall texture lacked the juiciness I was expecting. When it comes to sandwiches, 7-Eleven’s Egg Sando is still the undefeated champ.
Strawberry Banana Smoothie

It was tasty, refreshing, and fun to make on the machine but the serving size was underwhelming. I wish it yielded more because the flavor was actually quite good.
Cafe Latte

This confirmed that freshly brewed beats pre-packed any day. It tasted similar to our favorite latte from Arbiter, just a bit milkier. It was still a solid option if you’re craving for a comforting iced coffee.
Cream Puff

This is my husband’s favorite pick from 7-Eleven. The filling, whether custard or strawberry, is creamy and indulgent. The outer shell is more like a waffle than a soft choux, though. Personally, I prefer the fluffier pancake-like version from Lawson.
Melon Pan

I had high expectations for Japan’s beloved melon pan, and while this one from 7-Eleven was decent, it didn’t quite hit the flavor I was looking for. My standard was set high by BreadTalk’s version. Still, it’s not bad for a first try.
Apple Juice

This had a slightly bitter aftertaste that made me wonder if this is more natural or just oddly processed? Either way, it wasn’t my favorite.
Now let’s talk about how 7-Eleven Philippines is attempting to bring that same konbini vibe to local shelves. It’s a nice try but let’s be real, nothing compares to the original Japanese experience.
Spam & Cheese Korean-Style Egg Drop Sandwich

This was confusing. The scrambled egg didn’t taste like egg at all. It had a mashed potato-like texture that was oily and artificial. I honestly questioned if it was even edible. Luckily, the version with Spam and cheese helped cover up the odd egg texture. On the bright side, the bread was seared well and had that toasty, buttery flavor I liked.
Cream Cheese Pimiento Sandwich

When my husband asked if I was eating a siopao, I couldn’t blame him. The bread was oddly soft and puffy. It didn’t resemble the panini shown on the packaging. At least the filling was generous and actually tasted like proper cheese pimiento.
Choco Chip Oat Cookies

I had higher hopes for this one since it was made by Quaker and thankfully, it delivered. It was chewy, sweet, and tasted homemade. It had minimal chocolate chips, but the cookie itself was delightful. The chocolate reminded me of Stick-O, which brought some nostalgia.
Baked Macaroni

The Baked Macaroni was urprisingly good for a ready-to-eat meal. It even came with garlic bread that was softer and more flavorful than what you’d get in some restaurants. The pasta tasted like a rich tomato-based ragu. It was flavorful and satisfying.
Beef Pares

After avoiding 7-Eleven’s rice meals for a while, we finally gave this a shot and we were impressed. Yes, the portion was small with just three chunks of beef, but the flavor was solid. Honestly, it tasted better than what you’d get at many beef pares eateries around.
Graham Leche Flan

This was too sweet. The graham layer was dry and didn’t pair well with the flan. I wish the cream had been unsweetened to balance things out. I couldn’t even finish it in one sitting.
Tuna Crunchy Pan

This reminded me of our local “sushi wong,” except instead of being rolled, it was folded, and instead of ham and cheese, it had tuna. The filling was decent, but it didn’t really taste like tuna. It felt more like a novelty item than an actual sandwich.
Open! Milk

I got this last one from 7-Eleven Taiwan, and I think it’s exclusive to this location. The milk had a very light berry hint, which was quite refreshing on the palate. The cereal was fruity and sweet as well. It tasted good when mixed together, but it can be a choking hazard so be careful.
