How I Make South African Bologna Fries Hoagie Sandwich

Bologna Fries Hoagie Sandwich? What in the world is this?

Well, that’s just how I call it for everyone to understand it but the sandwich is actually known as Gatsby, a gigantic submarine sandwich that originated in South Africa, specifically in Cape Town. Once again, it’s a snack I learned from Netflix’s “Somebody Feed Phil” in “Cape Town” episode.

Gatsby began when a food shop owner wanted to serve a quick but filling meal to his workers. He filled a large round loaf with every food he could put and made sure that he could feed the workers with just one sandwich. Because of its huge size, one of the workers declared the sandwich a “Gatsby smash”, hence, the owner named it Gatsby.

Fillings of a Gatsby sandwich is divided into four parts: meat, which can be baloney, masala steak, chicken or calamari; vegetables, which are usually lettuce and tomatoes; dressing, which includes peri-peri sauce and tomato sauce; and fries, which is always present in a gatsby. Without the slap chips, it won’t be called a Gatsby. Egg and cheese are also added because I saw some Gatsbies with it.

For the meat, I actually wanted to try the masala steak but it’s more expensive and more complicated so I chose Bologna sausage instead.

2. Fry the fries, the fundamental ingredient of a Gatsby.

3. Cook the egg. You can also cook the bologna sausage if you want to. Most bologna sausage are pre-cooked so I didn’t bother putting mine on heat.

4. Shred the lettuce. If you have tomatoes, you can slice them also.

5. Slice the baguette in half and toast.

6. Spread peri peri sauce and tomato sauce in on baguette.

7. Add the shredded lettuce and bologna sausage.

8. Arrange the sunny side up egg and cheese.

9. Top with fries.

10. Close the sandwich. Having all these fillings, it was just hard.

11. Your Bologna Gatsby is now done and ready to be served.
