How I Make Vietnamese Egg Coffee

The “Saigon” episode of “Somebody Feed Phil” introduced street beverages like Vietnamese Coffee. Did you know that there are three of them in Vietnam? One is the traditional robusta beans brewed in Vietnamese coffee press and mixed with condensed milk. The other two are egg coffee and coconut coffee, which sound strange if you hear them for the first time.

I was already familiar with Vietnamese Egg Coffee before but it was when I watched the episode on Netflix that I appreciate the creation of Vietnamese coffee. It seems like the Vietnamese version of espresso con panna. But instead of a cream, they use custard. I took a shot of making today. It was a success and it feels like a masterpiece. I was grinning widely when I’ve done it.

My process isn’t the traditional one since I don’t have the exact same equipments and ingredients, but I’ll still share it for those who are curious.

The custard part isn’t supposed to be cooked but I steamed it for myself because I’m kinda afraid of raw eggs. If you want to cook it, too, just make sure that you continuously whisk it so it won’t turn solid.
