洋風食堂枝: A Long-Loved Western-Style Restaurant In Fukuoka City

order Soma WITHOUT SCRIPT We were on our way home from Super Autobacs when we stumbled upon this less touristy restaurant while walking. It had no English signs, so we knew it wasn’t targeting foreigners. Yet, there was a line of Japanese people waiting outside. That’s exactly the kind of place we wanted to try. We look forward to the ones locals eat at, not the ones listed in tourist itineraries.

It seemed like whenever people in Fukuoka crave Western food, 洋風食堂枝 is the go-to spot. According to locals, it’s a long-established Western-style diner, and with these types of restaurants slowly disappearing, it’s considered somewhat of a hidden gem.

This may just be a chicken cutlet meal, but it looked generous. It came with salad, miso soup, rice, an omelet, and spaghetti. The chicken nanban alone was already filling. The cutlet was crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. The coating reminded me a bit of fried chicken. The tartar sauce added a nice contrast, with hints of onion and herbs. Honestly, my expectations were low because of a disappointing katsu experience I had at a restaurant on Mount Aso. But this turned out way better than I expected.

My friend got overwhelmed with the number of options on the menu. Luckily, 洋風食堂枝 offers great combination meals. The ビジネスラン came with a thick slice of ginger pork and half a chicken cutlet. We already talked about the cutlet. It was just as delicious here as well. The ginger pork was more like a pork steak than the usual thin slices. The sauce had a strong ginger flavor, which I liked. The pasta, which represented a Neapolitan-style dish, was a little bland, but I think that worked out for balance.

That’s one huge, chunky burger patty right there! It’s honestly too big for a regular burger, so I appreciate them going the extra mile with this meal. The hamburger steak had a meatloaf-like flavor. It was meaty and savory. It was obviously well-ground, as you could feel the smooth consistency. I liked it better with the demi-glace sauce, which was rich and slightly sweet. They offer two sauces to choose from, and now I’m curious how the Japanese-style sauce would have paired with it. This dish felt more Western with the sunny-side-up egg and bacon on top, and I think the restaurant nailed that part.

I ordered the エッグカレ thinking it would be like omurice or at least an omelet or tamagoyaki with curry. But to my surprise, it was just a sliced hard-boiled egg. Again, it was just one egg and it was sadly hard-boiled! Tell me how I would be happy with this. I wasn’t thrilled, to be honest. But the meal was saved by the generous amount of rice and curry sauce. The curry itself was flavorful and fragrant, with tiny bits of meat and vegetables throughout. The spice level was just right and really elevated the savory curry flavor.

It’s a good thing my companions had a lot on their plates literally. The ミックスフライランチ came with pork fillet cutlet, fried shrimp, fried white fish, and a meat and potato croquette. Among all the dishes we ordered, this one felt like the best value. The pork was as satisfying as the chicken nanban. The shrimp still had their heads on, which gave the meal a handmade, authentic feel. I also liked the flexibility. For just 50 yen, you could switch miso soup for coffee, or swap the petit dessert for potato salad.
