APT BLK 513: The Dark Side Never Dies

For less than a decade now, BLK 513 has established its name as the country’s first frozen yogurt enhanced with activated charcoal for that unique taste. Since my place is just near their flagship store at S Maison, I am a frequent customer of BLK 513 when I was in college.

Recently, BLK 513 also opened a coffee shop called APT BLK 513 at Bonifacio Global City. Since we were attracted to its dark theme and were curious on how they will incorporate this into other food items, we purposely visited this block. There were plenty of visitors when we arrived and I’m surprised that even though they somehow switched into a cafe, their frozen yogurt cups are still their bestsellers here.

These were my first activated charcoal-enhanced frozen yogurt back in 2017. I couldn’t remember the toppings and fillings I picked. All I know is that it had some kind of potion that drew me to it. The fruit, crunch and sauce just made a soft-serve yogurt complete. I also remember that they had Dark Skim Cones, Super Skim Cups and floats before. I was aiming for those but they are now gone. I tried another Dark Side Cup recently and I made sure I took down notes on how delightful it was.

So I tried the Dark Side Cup with mango, dragon fruit, hijacked cereal, caramelized cookies and banana milk jam. The banana milk jam was a surprise for me. I didn’t think that you can transform banana into jam until now. It successfully got the mild creaminess of the plantain. Although you can’t see them through the black yogurt, both the mango and dragon fruit added freshness to the yogurt in different forms. The caramelized cookies tasted like Biscoff. It contributed sweetness to tangy dessert.

Dark Side Cheese Cup

I ordered the one with cheese one time so I can taste its difference among them all. But the combination just became weird. At first, I was just consuming the top part. It’s the one with the frozen yogurt, spiced cookie caramel sauce and caramel cookies and it was so good until I got the sponge-like cheese at the bottom. The texture is like marshmallow and the taste is like cream cheese. The addition of cheese is nice. I just think it was too much so it became oversatiating. Bits of the cheese should be enough.

T.G.T.B.T Chocolate Charcoal Cookie

At BLK 513 shops, they offer take-home treats that also have activated charcoal in them. The cookie taste like a peanut cookie to me than a chocolate cookie. Apart from the unique black hue, there’s nothing special in it to be called too-good-to-be-true. I like it though for its taste since it’s like a compact peanut crumbs. I love it for its less-sugar quality as its sweetness was just right for me. It targets customers who are health conscious. They also have a frozen yogurt cup that is topped with their homemade cookie.

Sweet Dark Latte

Let’s now proceed to APT BLK 513, where we experienced the dark side of coffee. We had the Iced Sweet Dark Latte, which I assume as a black version of the classic cafe latte with cold foam and cookie crumbs. It was delicious, not because of how the coffee was crafted, but because of the added garnishes on it. There was saltiness from the cream and sweetness from the cookie crumbs. Perhaps, I’ll order the plain Black Velvet or any of their Classic Brews next time so I can have a critique on the notes of the coffee itself.

Choki Choko Mocha

As someone who sells coffee cups and plastic cups, I’m fascinated with the choice of cup they use for hot drinks. It’s customized at I’ve never seen this in other stores. It adds glamour to its aesthetics. Although hidden, the Choki Choko Mocha was also black inside. The coffee was strong but it was still sweet for me. It’s the kind of sweetness that pains one’s throat. So I think I was at fault for buying this with a sweet snack. I wonder if the one without mocha would be sugary, too.

Black Out Cake

I ordered a slice of their chocolate cake and it was gigantic, which is opposite to the sizes of their drinks. I actually thought that the Black Out Cake would just be a simple chocolate cake in black hue. But they heated it and serve it with a dripping black ganache, which made it look more appetizing. The cake base was moist and crumbly. The fondant was soft and chewy at the same time. It looks overly sweet but it surprisingly wasn’t. After all, it was meant to be eaten with coffee. I’m amazed that they were able to make black food fancy.

Lava Bun

From afar, I thought the Lava Bun was some kind of savory bun so I was having doubts if it was really the lava bun I had in my mind. And yes it was! The bun was soft and there’s chocolate dripping when it was sliced in half like as if it was a surprise bomb. To make it black, the bun was covered with a thin layer of hardened chocolate. Despite of the generous amount of chocolate here, the sweetness was just right. However, it has this strange aftertaste that I couldn’t explain.
