Kain Tayo Sa Kanwatam

It’s the 394th day of quarantine period in our region and as I always say, this quarantine has given me the opportunity to discover food and travel destinations in my own province. I’ve been trying Mindoro restaurants for more than a year now and little did I know that the next restaurant I’ll be featuring in my blog is my mom’s. Oh yes! I’m talking about  the recent talk of the town, Kanwatam by Chef Dikki.

Kanwatam, which means “kain tayo” in Mangyan language, is a homegrown restaurant that mainly offers Tex Mex dishes.

The Pulled Pork Tacos is Kanwatam’s most recommended and the bestselling meal in the menu. The pork filling of this taco is rubbed with chef’s choice of spices, smoked low and slow for eight hours in a tank smoker and shredded to create a flavorful and tender pulled pork. Soft tacos were chosen as wrap for a more natural and more authentic taste. After all, soft shell taco is cohesive and easy to eat.

You’ll definitely get a solid food pairing of beef, cheese and tomato with Kanwatam’s Cheesy Beef Quesadilla. Flour tortillas are cooked until golden and crispy and are filled with well-seasoned ground beef and gooey cheese that are not only oozing in amount but also oozing in yumminess. Kanwatam also offers Cheesy Quesadilla and you wouldn’t think that  you’re eating a plain quesadilla. Eat them up along with the tomato salsa and you’ll have a heavenly snack.

Texas-style Back Ribs

Juicy, tender riblets that slide gracefully off the bone without any effort – this is how Kanwatam’s customers often describe the restaurant’s Texas-style Back Ribs. You’ll get a hint of smoky flavor in every bite, paired with a sweet and tangy sauce that doesn’t overpower the meat. With fantastic BBQ rubs, beautiful sauce, and slow grilling, it’s a dish that  satisfies the cravings of any meat lover.

Nachos

Who’s ready to get delightfully messy? Loaded with fresh veggies, cheese sauce, signature BBQ sauce and Kanwatam’s famous smoked pulled pork, this tri-color nachos is the crowd’s favorite dish may it be for appetizer, snack or bar chow. Though it has generous amount of toppings, I love that the tortilla chips don’t go soggy and the flavors don’t go overboard. Pair with Breen’s Fruit Tea and you’re set for the day.

Homemade Sausage

Kanwatam is proud for having ingredients that are made from scratch. The buns and patties of Chicago Style Burger are homemade. The tortilla bread used in tacos and quesadilla are formed in store. But the homemade sausage amazes me the most since it’s very unusual for restaurants in Mindoro to make their own sausages, not to mention that these sausages are big and juicy. It’s an incredible chow along with rice.

Chicago-style Burger

If you want to take a break from Tex-Mex food, this Chicago-style Burger is a must-try. It’s actually a best-seller in Roxas branch because of generous size at a reasonable price. Consisting only of store-baked buns, home-ground patty, melting cheese and fresh TLC, it may look simple, just like the usual Chicago Burger, but the fusion of flavors will bring you to a different dimension. I’m not exaggerating!

Chicken Fillet

As you can see, this is simply composed of strips of crispy chicken tenders and garnishes on top of rice but it’s the sauce that does the magic, which surely leaves one craving for more. Kanwatam has four different flavors of chicken fillet namely Spicy Korean, Teriyaki, Garlic Parmesan and Chicago Style BBQ. I promise, they are equally delectable. Although it’s coated, they were still able to bring out the tasty and juicy flavors of the chicken.

Artisan Ensaymada

I was never a fan of ensaymadas but this one is an exception. The bread is so soft and fluffy that I had a change of heart. Plus, it has a uniquely flavorful balance between the cheese and the buttercream frosting. I love that it is not satiating. Aside from the original flavor, they also had an ensaymada version of puto bumbong, which is one-of-a-kind. And yep! We don’t have to wait for the Holiday season to have this pastry since it is frequently available at Kanwatam.
