Sophia Ven Foodhaus: The Savory Of Pinamalayan

It’s the 149th day of quarantine period in our region and it’s my first time to come back to this nostalgic restaurant since the pandemic has began.

Sophia Ven Foodhaus is where we usually head after watching basketball league in our town. It’s the place where we dine in after a school event or celebration. My friends, who plays basketball, choose this food house as resting and eating spot after a tiring training. I also see some students take their lunch in this restaurant when they save enough money. Sophia Ven Foodhaus is a known restaurant since it’s near the municipality’s gym, town’s historical school and other landmarks. 

Aside from that, people keep coming back to this restaurant because of the food, which, they say, resembles Classic Savory’s.

The crispy skin is very flavorful as well as the tender meat close to the skin, wings and legs. They say that it got the flavors of Classic Savory’s Fried Chicken. I haven’t tried Savory but upon tasting this, I know that it’s good. It got the natural flavors of a chicken. The sauce is quite bland but it blends well with the chicken. I thought the liquid dripping from it was oil but I’m surprised to know that its juice from the meat.

Other restaurants sometimes trick us with their Calamares. I hate it when I was served with big pieces of Calamares only to find out that they have more batter than the squid itself. But I’m glad that it wasn’t the case with Sophia Ven’s Calamares. Seeing the white flesh of squid from the outside proves that they serve thick squids with thin breading. I like that they used bread crumbs instead of flour to make it crispier.

Pancit Bihon Guisado

I think, my mom already got her favorite in Sophia Ven Foodhaus during our first visit as she always orders this in every visit. Their Pancit Bihon Guisado has balanced taste of sweet and salty. As you can see in the photo, it has a great deal of vegetables, noodles and sauce. It’s perfect during our first try, actually. We tried it again and we found some inconsistencies. On the second time, it was kinda bland. But it was still a great meal.

Tuna Sisig 

I’m glad that they have Crispy Pork Sisig and Bangus Sisig. But I’m happier when I found something unusual like Tuna Sisig. It’s made with the same process and ingredients as Crispy Pork Sisig but I’m surprised that the tuna went well with these ingredients. Actually, this is even better because there are no fats. But I hate ginger so I don’t like it when my palate catches the flavor of the ginger bits. 

Beef Pares with Rice

Beef Pares never fails to amaze me no matter where I buy the dish. Although this wasn’t the best, Sophia Ven Foodhaus was able to display the tempting flavors of the beef. It’s soft but the texture is quite thick. The sauce tastes exactly like the Bulalo-flavored instant noodles that can be bought in cup. This meal already has a generous amount of meat, sauce and rice but one order isn’t enough for me. It’s that good!

Shanghai Rolls

While ordering, we asked the waiter how many pieces of lumpiang shanghai served in this dish. We’re surprised when she told us that there are twelve. How generous was that! But when our lumpiang shanghai was placed on our table, we’re wrong. There are many sticks with sizes half than the normal ones. They may be oily and small yet they are soft in the inside, crispy on the outside, served hot and full of meaty flavor.

Buffalo Wings

Buffalo Wings is supposed to have this specific spicy flavor closed to Sriracha or cayenne hot sauce. Clearly, I didn’t got that. But the food house’s Buffalo Wings is sweet and spicy so let’s just say that this is close. Just add some tanginess to copy Buffalo Wings. The meat is soft and tender. I just hope to find more crispiness on its skin. However, for an affordable price, I already got a number of big wings and drumettes so we’re good.

Turon Special

When they say that their Turon is special, they really mean it because they offer two kinds of Turon. They have the usual banana roll, which I instantly love because of the overloaded amount of sugar drizzled into it. But the surprise starts with the Ube Turon with it. The idea is unique and I’m happy that they used such upgrade. The rolls may be small but the inside is oozing with fillings while the outside is satisfyingly crispy.
